Mobile coverage in Northern Ireland set to improve

Posted by Kay on 15 February 2012

Mobile phoneMobile phone users are accustomed to their handsets being manufactured from a variety of synthetic materials, including different forms of hard plastic. These are hardly sustainable materials in an ecological sense since they require petrochemicals for their fabrication. Now, however, the world's first sustainable mobile smart phone is scheduled to hit the market.

The combined efforts of Three, Orange and T-Mobile should see 3G coverage expanding significantly. Currently, only slightly more than half of mobile users in Northern Ireland can get reliable 3G signals. Once the upgrades are completed, 3G coverage should reach more than 95% of all mobile users in Northern Ireland.

Mrs Foster added that the UK Government is also quite keen to assist in the development of a 4G network across the nation. Key players in that effort will include the Mobile Operators Association, which represents the major mobile phone networks in the UK. "I have been approached by the Mobile Operators Association and asked to sponsor an event at Parliament Buildings to stimulate debate on development of mobile networks," she commented.

Improved coverage is likely to mean that more Northern Ireland residents will want to acquire a mobile phone if they don't have one already, and this in turn should spur the mobile networks to provide even greater coverage and better service.
