Calls from mobile phones to 0800 numbers may be entering new territory in coming weeks. Ofcom has announced a plan to ban mobile operators such as O2, Vodafone, T-Mobile and Three from charging for mobile access to these numbers. At the current time, mobile phone users face stiff fees that can be as high as 40p per minute. This strikes many mobile phone users as patently unfair, since 0800 numbers are free when dialled from a traditional landline phone.

A favourable ruling from Ofcom means that Everything Everywhere, the joint venture comprised of both T-Mobile and Orange mobile phone networks, should be able to roll out 4G services sometime later this year. The plans submitted by T-Mobile and Orange did not depend on securing additional spectrum during the 4G auction – which, of course, has yet to occur. Instead, Everything Everywhere will use its existing allocation of spectrum to make a 4G system work in the UK.

Major British mobile phone network Everything Everywhere has announced that it will be offering 4G mobile internet services to UK resident by the end of 2012. The company has already applied to the regulatory authorities to begin offering 4G using its existing bandwidth. This will allow the company to begin promoting 4G on a small scale prior to the larger rollout expected later on.

Ever since the merger of T-Mobile and Orange to form the joint venture known as Everything Everywhere, UK mobile phone users have wondered about the new company's eventual plans for the two brands now under their control. At first there seemed to be little impetus for Everything Everywhere to make major changes; both the Orange and T-Mobile brand name continued to exist, with customers of both receiving the advantage of having access to additional infrastructure to support voice calls and data usage.

T-Mobile, one of the two mobile phone companies comprising the Everything Everywhere network, has announced plans for a new package called The Fully Monty. As the package name suggests, the deal will include unlimited mobile access. According to T-Mobile, the package will be the least expensive such deal in the UK and will be available from the start of next month.

NFC has been embedded into BlackBerry units since the middle of last year but, until now, the NFC capacity was under-utilised by most consumers. Mobile phone manufacturers consistently swing between bringing out new models that are on the cutting edge of new technology for the mobile market and producing streamlined, simple phones with limited features. The latest example of the latter is the Vivacity Android 2.3, recently released to the UK market by mobile phone network T-Mobile.
