0800 numbers soon expected to be free to mobile users

VodafoneCalls from mobile phones to 0800 numbers may be entering new territory in coming weeks. Ofcom has announced a plan to ban mobile operators such as O2, Vodafone, T-Mobile and Three from charging for mobile access to these numbers. At the current time, mobile phone users face stiff fees that can be as high as 40p per minute. This strikes many mobile phone users as patently unfair, since 0800 numbers are free when dialled from a traditional landline phone.

O2 UK announces new phones coming soon

O2The ‘coming soon’ section of the O2 website for the United Kingdom has been updated recently to include news about mobile phones O2 customers will soon be able to use on the network. Among the phones expected to arrive soon on the O2 service are several from major manufacturer HTC. The One X, the S and the V from HTC are expected to be launched by next month at the latest.

O2 website destined for major redesign

O2Major British telecommunications firm O2 intends to revamp its main UK website in order to create an online space that is more open and friendly toward customers. Part of the aim of the redesign is to achieve relationships with customers that are more personal. The planned revamp was discussed in an internal O2 document examined by Marketing. The document revealed that O2 would like to be perceived as "open, bold, clear and trusted."

Mobile phoneThe UK telecoms regulator Ofcom has issued several proposals that will help mobile phone users avoid ‘bill shock’, a term that has come to describe the increasingly common phenomenon of consumers receiving a bill that is grossly out of line with the amount they are expecting to have to pay for their voice and data service. A new study has indicated that in the last six months alone, almost 1.5 million mobile phone users may have experienced some form of bill shock.

Sales rumours swirl around O2 Ireland

O2The Sunday Independent has reported that O2 Ireland may be shopping around for a buyer. O2's mobile phone network assets in Ireland are valued at an estimated €800 million and are currently owned by Telefonica, a Spanish telecom with a considerable debt load. Telefonica has denied any intention to sell off its O2 Irish assets, announcing through a spokesperson: "Telefonica confirms that its Irish business is not for sale."

O2 May Face Stiff Fine

O2Mobile phone operator O2 may be required to pay as much as £500,000 in fines as a result of its recent accidental disclosure of customer phone numbers to websites. The breach has placed the company in violation of the Data Protection Act. The Information Commissioner's Office currently has the breach under investigation, a process that will require several weeks to complete but which could last much longer depending on what the ICO's research uncovers.
