It has long been understood that mobile phones and other electronics should be recycled when they have reached the end of their useful lives. Often, however, the impetus toward recycling has been to prevent the pollution of land and water that can occur when mobile phones end up in a landfill and slowly degrade over time. Many of the substances that leach out during this process are highly toxic; some are even carcinogenic.

One of the things that makes the Android mobile phone platform so appealing to end users is the ready supply of innovative and useful apps that have been developed for the phone. Google, the producer of the OS, has traditionally had a very good relationship with app developers, making it relatively easy for them to bring their product to market in the Android Marketplace, now officially known as Google Play. If an app becomes popular with users, it can bring its developer a great deal of revenue. Until recently, this was a business model that seemed to benefit all participants.
