Android is the UK's single most popular OS for smartphones. The platform, produced by US-based search engine company Google, was first launched in 2008. Since that time, more than 300 million smartphones based on the platform have been sold worldwide. One of the big selling points the Android platform has is the existence of more than 400,000 different apps, many of them offered to mobile phone users free of charge.

One of the things that makes the Android mobile phone platform so appealing to end users is the ready supply of innovative and useful apps that have been developed for the phone. Google, the producer of the OS, has traditionally had a very good relationship with app developers, making it relatively easy for them to bring their product to market in the Android Marketplace, now officially known as Google Play. If an app becomes popular with users, it can bring its developer a great deal of revenue. Until recently, this was a business model that seemed to benefit all participants.

No other mobile phone manufacturer makes more Android-based handsets than HTC, based in Taiwan. HTC now stands accused of infringing the patents owned by IPCom, a German firm. The patent in question, which involves base stations that help phones retain service even as users travel across the landscape, had been invalidated by a U.S. court during 2010. Now, that decision itself has been invalidated.

It is not every day that you see one of the founders of a major computing firm praising the products made by competitors, but that is the case this week with Steve Wozniak, who along with the late Steven Jobs helped to found Apple Computer Corporation. Wozniak praised phones that run on the popular Android OS made by Google, remarking "My primary phone is the iPhone. I love the beauty of it. But I wish it did all the things my Android does, I really do."

The Ville, a much-anticipated mobile phone from HTC, is scheduled to be a key player at the Mobile World Congress to be held later this year. No official word has been announced yet but the T-Mobile network in the United States is rumoured to be planning to carry the model, which has industry experts here wondering if it will also be available on Everything Everywhere, the company that resulted from the combination of Orange and T-Mobile UK

Vimeo has announced the release of its app on the Android platform. The app is free of charge to download and enables users to upload several classes of video content, including completely raw footage as well as video files that have already been edited.

LG is continuing to expand into the Android smartphone arena with its latest offering, known as the Spectrum. Featuring an HD screen and a 1,280 x 720 pixel display, the Spectrum appears to be positioned to compete against the popular Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone, although LG's own comments on the matter are restricted to insisting that the Spectrum is ideal for watching videos since its exclusive RGB striping technique produces superior colours to any other smartphone on the market at this time.

Back in September 2011, a new app was released for mobile phones that run on the Android platform. Known as the London Theatre App, the app is free of charge. From its launch until the end of the year, more than 7,000 theatre lovers downloaded the app, which is now poised to experience rapid growth as word of mouth about it spreads.

Those who enjoy BBC television programming will be happy to hear that the BBC iPlayer for mobile phones is doing well. The service first began in February of this year and since then more than 1.2 million Brits have chosen to install it on their Android-based mobile devices.

An astounding 88% of Brits who participated in the Consumer and Convergence report sponsored by KPMG reported that they have downloaded one or more apps into their mobile phones. This points to the widespread adoption of apps – small programs that perform useful functions – among UK mobile phone users. Another startling statistic emerged from the study, however: 38% of those using apps have yet to pay for one.
